Cantonal school structures
Cantonal school structures and cantonal offer (2018/2019)
The diagrams below are based on the global diagram of the Swiss education system. They show the cantonal school structures and the educational offer in the cantons. The diagrams have been created together with the cantonal education departments.
Compulsory education: The charts show how primary level education (incl. kindergarten or first learning cycle), lower secondary level (number of sections/streams and their designations) and special needs education are organised in different cantons. A summary description of compulsory education in Switzerland (length of education levels) can be accessed here.
Post-compulsory schooling: Post-compulsory education is largely based on national requirements. There are, however, cantonal differences in what is offered (e.g. specialised middle schools, specialised matura).
With all the diagrams, there is a link to the ISCED (International Standard Classification of Education). This makes it possible to compare education levels internationally.
